GROCERY MARKETS & SHOPS BOARD
(FOR GREATER MUMBAI, THANE, PALGHAR & RAIGAD DISTRICTS)

The Grocery Markets & Shops Board for Greater Bombay came into existence as a result of the progressive labour policy of the State Government and has been established under the provisions of Section 6 of the Maharashtra Mathadi, Hamal & Other Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment & Welfare) Act, 1969 by Govt. Notification, Industries, Energy & Labour Department No. UWA/1369/(Grocery)/Lab-IV, dt. 15.12.1969. The Board is a tripartite institution on which eighteen members are appointed, two representing the State Government and eight representing respectively each of the employers and unprotected workers. One of the Government Nominee had been appointed as a Chairman of the Board.

The Grocery Market & Shops Board under the Maharashtra Mathadi Act was established to address the challenges faced by Mathadi workers in the grocery sector. These workers, who carry loads on their heads or backs, were often subjected to unfair wages and poor working conditions. The board was created to ensure that Mathadi workers received regular monthly wages, social security benefits like Provident Fund, Gratuity, Medical Benefits, Bonus, and leave wages, which significantly improved their living standards.

Additionally, the board's formation allowed for the proper utilization of these workers, preventing unemployment and providing them with a sense of security and dignity in their employment. This initiative has been recognized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) for providing social security to the Mathadi workers.
